Gibbes Museum of Art Announces 
Schedule of Exhibitions for Fiscal Year 2012 
Diverse Array of Exhibitions Slated 

The Gibbes Museum of Art announces the schedule of exhibitions that will be on view throughout the museum's fiscal year which runs July 1 through June 30. The roster includes exhibitions created from the museum's extensive permanent collection as well as traveling exhibitions on loan from other art institutions. Highlights of the year include a career retrospective of Charleston Renaissance artist Alfred Hutty and two back-to-back solo exhibitions from internationally recognized Charleston-based artists Jill Hooper and Mary Whyte. 

SCHEDULE OF EXHIBITIONS: 
The Charleston Story 
Ongoing Installation, Various 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor galleries 
Drawn from the museum's collection of American art, The Charleston Story highlights significant people, places, and periods from Charleston's beginning as a British colony, through the American Revolution, the Civil War, and culminating today as a culturally diverse and dynamic community. 

The Creative Spirit: Vernacular Art from the Gadsden Arts Center Permanent Collection 
July 22 – October 16, 2011, Main Gallery 
This exhibition showcases paintings, drawings, and sculpture by the foremost self-taught artists of the American South. 

In Search of Julien Hudson: Free Artist of Color in Pre–Civil War New Orleans 
July 22 – October 16, 2011 Rotunda Galleries 
This is the first retrospective of the brief but important career of portraitist Julien Hudson, one of the earliest-documented free artists of color working during the 19th century. 

Breaking Down Barriers: 300 Years of Women in Art 
October 28, 2011 – January 8, 2012, Main Gallery 
Beginning with Henrietta Johnston-the first female professional artist in America-and continuing to the present, this exhibition examines the challenges faced by women artists over the past 300 years. 

Camera Works: Masters in Photography 
October 28, 2011 – January 8, 2012, Rotunda Galleries 
This exhibition features twentieth-century masters of photography selected from the Gibbes permanent collection and local private collections including works by Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and many more. 

The Art of Alfred Hutty: Woodstock to Charleston 
January 20 – April 22, 2012, Main Gallery 
One of the principal artists of the Charleston Renaissance, this retrospective exhibition of Alfred Hutty's career features over fifty works in oil, watercolor, pastel, and most importantly, his exquisite prints created in Charleston and Woodstock, New York. 

Jill Hooper: Contemporary Realist 
January 20 – April 22, 2012, Rotunda Galleries 
This exhibition features recent work by Charleston artist Jill Hooper, a classically-trained, realist painter whose extraordinary portraits have earned international recognition. 

Mary Whyte: Working South 
May 4 – September 9, 2012, Main Gallery, 
Renowned Charleston watercolorist Mary Whyte captures-with exquisite detail and sensitivity-the essence of vanishing blue-collar professions in the South. 

Places for the Spirit: Traditional African American Gardens of the South 
May 4 – September 9, 2012, Rotunda Galleries 
This exhibition showcases a stunning collection of photographs documenting African American folk gardens¬-and their creators- by fine art photographer Vaughn Sills. 


SUMMER/FALL PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS 
The Gibbes Museum of Art will offer special programs related to each exhibition as well as parties and other special events throughout the year. Highlights for this summer and fall include: 

Society 1858 Summer Party 
Bitters & Twisted in the Salon D'Orleans 
Friday, July 29 from 8pm – 11pm 
Complementing the subject matter of the exhibition In Search of Julien Hudson: Free Artist of Color in Pre–Civil War New Orleans, this party will transport guests to 19th-century New Orleans with nostalgic music, classic cocktails, and regional delicacies.

Community Day: Folk Art 
Presented by Roper St. Francis Healthcare 
Museum visitors can enjoy art-making activities and special performances at this family event held in conjunction with the exhibition The Creative Spirit: Vernacular Art from the Gadsden Arts Center Permanent Collection

Women in Art Lecture Series 
Held in conjunction with the exhibition Breaking Down Barriers: 300 Years of Women in Art, this lecture series celebrates women and art. 
Wednesdays at 6pm 
November 2 - Mary Whyte, featured exhibition artist 
November 9 - Erica Hirshler, curator of American paintings, Museum of Fine Arts Boston 
November 16 - Mario Buatta, New York-based interior designer 
$20 per lecture for members, $30 for non-members 
$50 for the series for members, $80 for the series for non-members
